PSHE & RSE

PSHE & RSE

September 2020 saw Personal, Social, Health & Economic education and Relationship & Sex Education become statutory elements of the National Curriculum, aspiring for all children to grow up healthy, happy and safe whilst being able to manage the challenges and opportunities of adult life in modern Britain.

At St Andrew’s, our PSHE/RSE curriculum is sequenced in a meaningful way that enables children to make connections as they progress from unit to unit, term to term and year to year. Our curriculum focuses on empowering our children with a voice, enabling them to understand and respect who they are, and equipping them for life and learning. They are encouraged to ask, as well as answer, questions and to discuss their ideas with each other as their learning deepens and broadens each year.

From EYFS through to Year Six, six units are revisited each year delivering a spiral curriculum that ensures progression. We use a mindful approach to deliver PSHE/RSE, tailoring our teaching and learning programme to the needs of the children. Each of the six half terms has an overarching unit, taught across the school:

  • BEING ME IN MY WORLD focuses on children understanding their own identity, how they fit in their class, their school and wider community;
  • CELEBRATING DIFFERENCE includes anti-bullying and understanding;
  • DREAMS & GOALS encourages goal-setting and aspirations;
  • HEALTHY ME focuses on self-esteem and confidence alongside healthy lifestyle choices, sleep, nutrition, rest and exercise;
  • RELATIONSHIPS explores friendship, family, conflict resolution and communication skills;
  • CHANGING ME includes Relationship & Sex Education within the context of coping positively with change.
